Alexis Izar Gordon

Alexis Izar Gordon is a 13-year-old boy soprano who has been a member of the Opera School of the Vienna State Opera since the age of eight. He has already gained extensive stage experience in major productions including Bizet’s Carmen, Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame, Verdi’s Otello, Puccini’s La Bohème, Strauss’s Die Frau ohne Schatten and Berg’s Wozzeck. He has also performed in Bach’s St John Passion with the Vienna Philharmonic and appears as the solo Erster Knabe in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte.   Born in London in 2013 into a family of professional musicians, Alexis later moved with his family to Vienna. At the Vienna State Opera’s Opera School, he is coached by the renowned teachers Johannes Mertl and Georg Stangelberger. Among his musical mentors are the distinguished Bulgarian soprano Krassimira Stoyanova and conductor Jimmy Chiang, Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Vienna Boys’ Choir. He has also taken masterclasses with mezzo-soprano Tanja Ariane Baumgartner. Through his work at the Vienna State Opera, Alexis has appeared in numerous major opera productions with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic, performing under conductors including Franz Welser-Möst and Christian Thielemann. At the age of ten,   Alexis made his Stockholm debut as soprano soloist in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, conducted by his father, Alexander Gordon Zemtsov. At twelve, he performed the solo part in Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Arnold Schoenberg Choir under Gavin Sutherland. He has also appeared in chamber music concerts alongside musicians including Jukka-Pekka Saraste and Pekka Kuusisto, and has performed on Austrian and Bulgarian television and radio, including ORF and BNR.   Contemporary Ukrainian composer Alexander Rodin wrote Agnus Dei for Alexis, while Bulgarian composer Borislava Taneva composed and dedicated her Ave Maria to him. Alexis gave the premieres of both works in Finland, with further performances planned in Italy, Sweden, North Macedonia and Austria during 2026.   Highlights of the 2026/27 season include the opening concert of the Skopje Philharmonic season on 1 October 2026, where he will perform the soprano solo in Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. He will also appear in a chamber programme with the Jerusalem Quartet, featuring music by Schubert, Taneva and Rodin alongside Baroque arias.   Alongside singing, Alexis studies piano, clarinet, violin and viola. His other great passion is mathematics and science. He attends mathematics lectures at the Faculty of Mathematics of the University of Vienna and achieved fourth place in the National Mathematics Olympiad organised by TU Wien and the University of Vienna. In December 2026, he is especially looking forward to attending the Nobel Prize lectures and Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm.
